Who we are

Michael B. MacDonald, popular music instructor at the University of Alberta, founded Sound + Noise in 2009 as a pedagogical extension of his popular music courses. Sound + Noise is a public venue for the development of socially engaged critical thinking on the arts. The young writers who make up Sound + Noise focus on the local production of the arts while not forgetting that, of course, these arts are understood within the larger framework of the global culture industries. We believe that developing our critical thinking and writing skills requires participation in the critical discourses of art. With Sound + Noise we hope to encourage lively and considered debate about the many aspects of music and art in our community and in our lives.
